Guest post on Scott Bourne’s Blog – Black & White HDR Photography
I did a guest post over on PhotoFocus about B&W HDR Photography. There is a quote in there that got tweeted out — "HDR is about light; it’s not about color." It’s true! Anyway, you can go read the guest post on his site.
Review of David duChemin’s book, Within the Frame
"Within the Frame" is a great book and I recently gave it a 5-star review on Amazon. Here is what I said about David’s work:
David presents all of his thoughts in a wonderful and inspiring way.

I find, personally, that the typical photography book is predictable and obvious. I like thinkers that challenge the status-quo, and David certainly falls in that realm. This book will inspire you because he’ll give you new ways to think about stuff you’ve been thinking about for years. If you are the kind of person that just wants old tired dictums being reinforced, then this isn’t the book for you. It’s full of new, fresh thought, smart conclusions, and, of course, beautiful photographs.

The world of Photography is changing, and David is one of the great flag bearers of the new age.
I also invite you to visit David’s website. He’s got his own review of my book there, which was awful nice of him!
Daily Photo – The Long Road to the Andes
There was a series of plane hops and car rides to get down towards the very edge of Argentina. At one point, I felt like I was on this road for a good 5 hours in a very sketchy rental van.

We pulled over to the road to relieve ourselves. I was ill-prepared for how windy this place is. There’s just no good way to capture how windy it was, since everything over one foot off the ground had blown away an epoch ago. The only evidence I have is that this was made with a single RAW file since I could not keep the tripod still for multiple exposures! I could not even keep myself upright! Let’s not talk about how I had to relieve myself; I can simply say there is only one good direction to aim.

compare Amazon Cloud Drive to Dropbox
Amazon Cloud Drive

I’d say Dropbox wins on everything but price, if you need more than 2 GB that is.

Dropbox provides native software for Linux and isn’t reliant on Adobe Air like Amazon Cloud Drive is.

You can share files publicly with Dropbox, such as dl.dropbox.com/u/13243104/cams.html

Mozy is more for backup than multi-PC syncing: 50 GB on just one computer at Mozy is per month ( a year). Is there anyone Amazon doesn’t beat on price?

SpiderOak looks good.

UPDATED: I don’t have any Apple devices, so iCloud sucks.

6/25/2011 UPDATED: People are searching for info on sharing photos via Amazon: You can’t do it.

[Recorded 1990] How Computers Work: A Journey Into The Walk-Through Computer is an educational video produced by The Computer Museum and hosted by David Neil of PBS’s Newton’s Apple. Join David Neil and his four young companions on an entertaining and illuminating trek through The Computer Museum’s one-of-a-kind, two-story working model of a desktop computer. The Computer Museum in Boston, Massachusetts was the predecessor institution to the Computer History Museum located in Mountain View, California since 1996. Sadly, the walk-through computer did not move to California with the Computer Museum’s collection, but as you can see from this video, it was a very engaging exhibit.

Question by Stuart: How do I integrate solar panel technology into any electronics?
I would like to know how to make a regular mini solar panel compatible with any electronics. I was thinking about creating a solar powered DS and i don’t know how to make the DS compatible with the solar panel.

Best answer:

Answer by navy.mil
Well u really cant do any technologies easily because it would have to be a direct current device or else u would need an inverter which would change it to alternating current but those can be expensive and with a mini solar panel its not worth it. But a DS is direct current so thats not a problem u would probably want to get 2-4 mini panels with an output of 3 volts then put two in series if u only have two and if u have 4 then put two in series and then put those in parallel then u need to open the battery compartment and soder the red wires from the panels onto the positive of the battery then the black wires onto the negative of the battery then sucure the panels to the DS cover ie hot glue and if u have 4 panels then put two on the bottom two on the top and to charge it open up the DS in the sun

Question by kingzabin: What are those creatures who get into your electronics?
There is some kind of creature that (mythological) gets into electronics and messes them up. I often hear people blaming computer troubles on them, but I cannot recall the name.

gremlins

Edit:
As is not uncommon with folkloric creatures in fiction, the nature of gremlins differs greatly depending on the setting. Creatures called gremlins are encountered in various forms in video games, fantasy literature, role playing games, etc. Many of the gremlins encountered in popular culture have little in common with the original critters from the air force legend other than their name.

A famous example is the 1984 movie Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. The gremlins in these movies had nothing obvious to do with aircraft in particular, although they were portrayed as adept at subverting or sabotaging mechanical systems; more explicit connections between the films’ Gremlins and those of folklore were drawn in the novelizations however. The gremlins in these movies differ from traditional folkloric mythology as they appear as monsters with large ears that are similar to a bat’s, sharp teeth and claws, red eyes, and dark reptilian skin.

In fact, the creatures of this movie are named “gremlins” because the protagonist, Billy Peltzer, recalls a speech by his friend, Murray Futterman, about the legend of gremlins. Thus, noting the similarities, he names them “gremlins”.

Another example of gremlins in popular culture appears on the episode of Charmed named “The Power of Three Blondes” where two little blue creatures Paige referred to as gremlins start sabotaging things at her new temp job.

Question by funnybunnyhunny: What’s a great gift for someone who is into gadgets and electronics?
The holidays are right around the corner and I’m looking for a Christmas gift to give to my boyfriend. He’s into a lot of gadgets and electronics and honestly, I’d love to give him something amazing but I also don’t want to give him something that he’s not going to like too much. He really knows his stuff so I may be better off with a non – gadget/electronic related gift. This is our first holiday together so I want to make it memorable.

Any ideas?

Question by Sean: What would you call the college major that working on/building electronics fits into?
I’ve been into taking apart electronics/putting together electronics, repairing friends broken video game systems, modifying electronics, etc.
I’m curious as to what this would fit under in college. I am in the process of applying to colleges, and I’m currently looking at majoring in Communications, and minoring, or taking a double major in whatever this stuff is called.
is it Electrical Engineering? Computer Engineering?

Best answer:

Answer by mikeburns55
I did the same thing when I was in junior high and highschool. I took apart all kinds of things and assembled the parts using schematics that I got at the library.

It’s in electrical engineering. Take a few courses and see if you like it.

Question by John: Have you had problems with your electronics after moving into an old home with no grounds?
I’ve always looked at the grounds as protecting people from hot appliances when grounds fault but it seems a lot of people think the grounds are there to protect electronics…

Has anyone had issues with their electronics after moving into an old home with no grounds? I’ve lived in such a home before and never had an issue but I am preparing to move into a new one and am doing some new research.

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by basteve721
Transmission electronics is greatly dependent on a good ground, such as HAM radio or other two way communications. The older cordless phones were notorious for poor reception if the ground was bad.
Today, the power supply feeding your computer is not as sensitive as your older HiFi equipment.

For safety sake, check your ground and install a GFIC near sinks.

Question by Bobby L: What ink is good to draw pictures that will be scanned into computer?
Hey people,

I tried using a normal ink pen to draw. I scanned the image into the computer and tried to color it. I used the magic wand in photostudio to catch the part I want to color but it couldn’t catch the part because there are still gaps in between the inks I guess it is not thick enough. Would appreciate any advice given by any experts. Thanks a lot.

Best answer:

Answer by denise
I would try some kind of waterproof Indian ink that you use with a dip pen. If you use watercolors this would be good with that medium.

Question by Dashing Geek: Do those devices that roll newspapers into fireplace logs work?
I have seen a few devices that roll your newspapers up into tight logs. When I have burned looser newspaper I get a lot of ash flying around, and I do not want that. Anyone have any insight? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by eskie lover
They do roll the newspaper into logs but they still leave a lot of ash in the fireplace when you burn them. Also, you have to be careful and not roll them too tightly because air doesn’t get to all of the sheets and they smolder.

How to integrate dining area into living room?

On August 23, 2010, in Dining, by admin

Question by zoeskylark: How to integrate dining area into living room?
I live in a small apartment and the dining area is virtually part of the living room. I have a small rectangular wooden table (antique) that isn’t especially attractive. How can I make this look more attractive? The dining chairs are small and very pretty Victorian. My furnishing style is a blend of modern (mostly leather) with antique.
